Strengthen the businesses, strengthen the ummah.
Why URWA exists, and what we are building together.
A community can only be as strong as its ability to provide for its own. Ours is generous and hardworking, yet most of what we earn leaves our hands almost as soon as it arrives, flowing out of the community before it can take root with us. What does not circulate among us cannot grow with us.
Our faith speaks to this directly. The Qur'an teaches that wealth should keep moving through the community, and not pool only in the hands of a few. We are called to cooperate with one another in righteousness, and to hold fast, all together, to what is good. A Muslim economy that sustains itself is not only sound business. It is part of how we are guided to live.
We have a model in our own history. Khadija, may Allah be pleased with her, was among the most successful merchants of her time, and she placed her wealth in the service of her faith and her community when it needed her most. In her hands, wealth was never something to hoard, and never something to let drift away. It was meant to hold a community up.
We believe the most lasting way to strengthen the Muslim community is to strengthen the businesses within it. Not with charity, which gives once and is soon gone, but with something that endures. Real customers for Muslim-owned businesses. Real savings for Muslim families who keep their spending close to home. And a real reason for entrepreneurs to start, and to keep going, in an economy that makes both so hard.
URWA is how we do it. One membership card that points our spending back toward each other. Members save at a curated network of Muslim-owned businesses. Those businesses gain loyal customers and a community behind them. And a single dollar, instead of leaving us, travels from one of us to the next, holding many hands up at once.
The name comes from al urwa al wuthqa, the firmest handhold in the Qur'an, the grip that does not break. It is what we intend to be for one another.
We begin in the GTA, home to one of the largest and most entrepreneurial Muslim communities in the world. From there we will grow across the country, and in time, by everyone's duas and the tawfiq of Allah, far beyond it. This is only the beginning. Take hold, and let us build an economy that holds each other up.
We were never meant to rise alone. Take hold, and we rise together.
